Gout Dietary Restrictions



Gout is one of the most painful forms of arthritis. It can be caused by excessive intake of foods that contributes to high amount of uric acid in our system. These foods are peas, beans, liver and many others.

It is very likely that you will have gout if you have a family member who had one. Another factor that may cause a person to suffer from gout is if you are overweight, drinking too much alcohol or if you eat too much rich purines.

Gouts attacked in suddenness with utmost pain. You may check with various symptoms such as swelling, redness and pain caused by inflammation. As soon as the person suffers from gout, there will be gout dietary restrictions. The patient should be mindful of these restrictions. This should be diligently followed.

The gout dietary restrictions include too much alcohol. This means the patient should avoid liquors. Peas, bean cauliflower, mushrooms should be avoided at all cost. Avoid foods that are high in purines like canned seafood like sardines, herring, smelt, yeast, hearts and mussels. If you do not want to take your health to chances, take note of those that have elevated purines content like scallops, meat extracts and hearts. Furthermore, eating beyond the normal diet is not a good idea. This is also a gout dietary restriction.  If the food is not rich in purines but still more than what is enough, it is still bad. The patient should have just enough food when eating. Anything in excess can be blatant on the health.

The foods that are fine for intake are bananas, celery, tomatoes, vegetables including the green leafy vegetables, pineapple, oranges, fruit juices, low fat dairy products, breads, cereals, pasta, rice chocolate, cocoa, coffee and cherries.

It is also advisable to lose weight. Being obese will not help. In fact, it could enhance gout. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to lose weight especially when you are used on eating much.  You can start by removing a part of your food intake gradually. If you are eating full plated rice, remove ¼ on the next day. Once you are used to it, remove another ¼ until you reach your goal. The important thing is that you are reducing certain amount regularly until you can regulate your meal. This way, you will be losing weight gradually. This will diminish the feeling of being deprived from the food intake that you had been used to take.
